A few days ago we reported on the Individual Time Trial successes of three World and Paralympic Games medal-winning paratriathletes at the UCI Para-Cycling World Championships in Baie-Comaeu, Quebec, Canada.
Jetze Plat (NED) and the British duo of George Peasgood and Fran Brown all won gold medals in their respective categories against the clock. After a couple of days rest, it was time to go again, this time in the Road Race format. And three more medals were delivered.
And then there were ten
In that first piece we highlighted that PTWC Paratriathlon legend, Jetze Plat, had won the last five editions of the Individual Time Triathlon championships, as well as his two Paralympic Games paratriathlon gold medals. He has now matched that in the Road Race too, completing something of a quintuple-double – winning both events at five consecutive World Championships.
Brown’s ‘hardest race’ ever
Fran Brown, the 2019 PTS2 Pratriathlon World Champion, also completed the ITT / Road Race double in the C1 division. She said on her Instagram feed:
“Epic, what a way to round out the world championships with a second win and more importantly managing to stick with the combined c1-3 lead bunch until almost the end. That was by far the hardest race I’ve ever done and I’m pretty shattered now but so proud to be able to wear the stripes for both the TT and road for the next year, what an honour. Thanks to all the @britishcycling staff for the support and the other riders for being super welcoming this week.”
George adds Bronze to collection
George Peasgood was very content after adding Road Race bronze to his ITT gold medal. A triathlete in a road race sprint is a rarity, but he was more than happy with his efforts to go for the win in what is certainly not his speciality event:
“Roll the in a few early moves but it wasn’t meant to be.
“After our front group of C4 riders settled (almost to cafe spin speeds), I kept trying to animate the race and break away but everything was chased down. I knew my sprint wouldn’t be as good as the others, so to come away with third in a reduced group is still quite an achievement for me.
“Plenty of lessons learnt out there today and arguably a better ride than last year where I finished 2nd after a 90km break away.
“Been class support whilst out here, thank you all for the messages and following 
now time to head home.”
