Tributes have been paid to Wales and Great Britain international age-group triathlete Rebecca Comins, who died after a collision with a van while cycling.

Becky, who was 52 and had represented Great Britain at World and European Championships, died after a collision with a white Vauxhall Movano van on the A40 near Raglan in South Wales last Thursday (June 2).

A 47-year-old man from the Abergavenny area was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and has been released under investigation as enquiries continue.

Becky had been due to compete for Wales at WTCS Leeds this weekend alongside her son George, and she had also been looking forward to the British Sprint Championships in Cardiff.

Family’s moving tribute

Her grieving family released a moving tribute, which read: “Our beautiful Rebecca was taken from us on Thursday 2 June doing something she loved.

“She was a caring and loving wife to Stephen and an amazing mum to both George and Millie.

“We ask people to respect our privacy at this sad time and allow us to grieve as a family.”

Becky was a member of Dragon Tri Club, Newport Phoenix Cycling Club and Caldicot Running Club. She had also raced for Monmouth Triathlon Club in the past and was the current Welsh Triathlon Super Series Vintage Veteran Champion.

Becky represented the Great Britain Age Group Team at the 2018 European Championships in Tartu and the 2019 World Championships in Lausanne.

‘A fantastic ambassador’

Welsh Triathlon said it was saddened to hear of her tragic passing, describing her as “a popular face across the Welsh triathlon scene, and a fantastic ambassador for our sport.”

It added: “Becky was a fierce competitor, but with it had a positivity and energy that was infectious.

“She loved the sport; she loved the training and Becky was central to any social activities across her clubs.

“Becky will be sadly missed by everyone within our triathlon community, and we extend our deepest sympathies to Becky’s family, Steve, George and Millie and her wider friends at this sad time.”

Anyone with information about the collision is asked to contact Gwent Police.

The force stated: “We’re asking for anyone who may have witnessed the collision or any motorists with dashcam footage that were using the A40 between 7pm and 7.30pm and between Abergavenny and Raglan to contact us.

“You can call us on 101 or send us a direct message on Facebook or Twitter, quoting log reference 2200184652 with any details.”
