The 2023 IRONMAN World Championship wrote more names into Kona folklore after an epic triathlon day on the Big Island of Hawaii.
It was Britain’s Lucy Charles-Barclay who finally scaled the summit after four second-place finishes, producing a brilliant all-round performance to lead for every second of the day. She would do it in a new course-record time.
Germany’s Anne Haug produced a new run course record to claim second, while compatriot Laura Philipp also stormed through the field to take the final podium spot.
But those were only three of the stories on a day where there were many storylines – including Kona debutant Taylor Knibb finishing a highly creditable fourth on her debut over the full distance.
Five-time champion Daniela Ryf meanwhile finished fifth on what was likely to be her final appearance as a pro on the Big Island.
