British Triathlon has launched a new major events strategy designed to take the sport through to 2024 with annual tentpole stops in Leeds, Swansea and Sunderland.

The three-year plan kicks off with World Triathlon Championship Series Leeds – won by Alex Yee and Maya Kingma in 2021 – on June 11 and 12 next year, and is followed by World Triathlon Para Series Swansea on August 6.

Sunderland meanwhile will play host to the British Triathlon Super Series Grand Final for the very first time.

Organisers claim the plan not only ensures that the events now have a more secure future for the next three years, but it will also facilitate working with a variety of event organisers to innovate and develop the sport.

Para home a major goal

Securing a long-term venue for a World Triathlon Para Series event was a major aim, and the announcement of Swansea to host is a major step forward.

The Super Series Grand Final Sunderland will support the development of the swim bike and run agenda with the city and its local communities.

Andy Salmon, British Triathlon CEO, said: “I am extremely proud to be launching this strategy and reinforcing our commitment to bringing swim, bike, run to more people in new areas around the country.

Salmon on positive impact

“The team have worked tirelessly to ensure that we offer opportunities to match our performance ambition with giving those new to the sport the chance to experience all that a multisport event has to offer.

“I want to thank our partners including UK Sport and World Triathlon for helping us bring our ambitions to life, our host city partners and also the other bids we received from cities across the country, who we hope will play a role in the development of our Super Series longer term.

“I am excited about the positive social impact we can create in the communities we are working in as we look forward to seeing people enjoy our sport in not one but three key locations in 2022 and beyond.”
